Temple University came into the 1987-88 season ranked #12 in polls. They rattled off 14 wins in a row before losing to UNLV, their only loss in the regular season. Head Coach John Chaney's Owls went 18-0 in conference play, winning the A-10 championship and entered the NCAA Tournament as the 1-seed in the East.
Once there they defeated Lehigh, Georgetown and Richmond to setup an Elite 8 battle with 5-seed Duke. The Owls lost 63-53 and saw their 18 game winning streak come to an end.
Temple went 32-2 on the year, were ranked #1 in the country for 6 consecutive weeks and had 4 future NBA players on their 87-88 roster. None more special than freshman phenom Mark Macon. Macon averaged a team high 21 points per game.
"We could see Mark was a great player the first week. He sees the game in slow motion, like a pro in a college situation. The best part is he's humble and team-directed. Everybody here knows his own role; as Coach says, we 'stay at home.' We do what's best for Temple. Mark picked that up quick."
